Lady Chapel
The cathedral is tall and straight, and blackened round the edges, but the lady chapel is
White and gray, windows arching, clear glass.
Empty windows full of trees
Frame the Lady statue, brash
Her eyes are terrifying.
She is the only new thing
But she is not new.
I open my throat and trees rush in
Roots
Split me open like a seed.
We, your daughters,
Are nothing but light and trees.
I am the Lady, she says
I am the green
Sprout seed,
The urgent
Rain,
The root that
Splits the tower.
What have we called forth, with our voices?
Something old, and new,
Rising sun and bone,
Blood and spark unseen:
The goddess in the gray stone
The lady in the green.
